Anders Fjeldbo Haubjerg recently defended his PhD thesis investigating how energy consumption in the drying process in the production of extruded fish feed can be optimised, without compromising product quality.

“Anders presented some very interesting conclusions which give us specific knowledge about reducing the environmental impact from our production, without compromising on the high quality of our feeds. Bad pellet quality could affect our customers’ economic results negatively”, explains Maike Oehme, Quality and Technology Coordinator for Aller Aqua.

Anders carried out his practical research at Aller Aqua’s Danish factory in Christiansfeld, where he used the extruder-room and the laboratory. To clarify the thesis Anders developed a mathematical model. He used pellets from Aller Aqua to test various experimental drying processes, and thereafter analysed pellet-quality.

Anders Fjeldbo Haugbjerg's PhD thesis is entitled Ensuring Technical Product Quality in the Energy Efficient Hot Air Drying of Extruded Fish Feed, and has been produced in cooperation with Graintec A/S under the supervision of Christian T Veje, lecturer at Syddansk Universitet.

Maike Oehme, PhD in physical quality of feed pellets, joined professor Francis Courtrois from AgroParisTech, as part of the review committee, and both were external opponents to the defense of the thesis, which took place at Syddansk Universitet on the 8th June 2016.
