Salmon farming responds well to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, said Cermaq’s CEO Jon Hindar at GOAL 2015 conference in Vancouver today.
During a presentation titled, 'The role of salmon farming - in light of the global sustainability challenges', Mr Hindar spoke on megatrends in food demand, consumer concerns and the role of the salmon industry.
Mr Hindar painted a grim picture of the future. By 2025, the entire southern hemisphere, and extensive parts of the north, will be suffering some degree of water scarcity. By 2030, we will need 50 percent more energy, 40 percent more water and 35 percent more food. With the world's urban population expected to increase by 72 percent by 2050, aquaculture will be essential to meet rising global food requirements, he said.
Salmon, he claimed, is a good fit with trends in consumer demand, being easy to prepare, healthy and with a low ecological impact.
