In order to maintain the consistency and impartiality of the MSC fishery certification process, all fishery assessment reports are peer-reviewed by independent fisheries scientists.

The MSC has recently established a ‘Peer Review College’ to improve the efficiency of this process.

We are now inviting applications from experienced fisheries scientists to act as occasional peer reviewers, initially as part of a 12 month trial.

Candidates should have:
  • A university degree in fisheries, marine conservation biology, natural resources, environmental management or other relevant field
  • And/or at least 5 years management or research experience in marine conservation biology, natural resources or environmental management applied to fisheries research or management
  • Experience of at least one of the following competency areas: fish stock assessments, fish stock biology / ecology, fishing impacts on aquatic ecosystems, fishery management and operations, and/or current knowledge of the country, language and local fishery context (see the application form for further details)
Successful peer reviewers will need to complete a series of online training modules and will be required to work remotely, typically for two days per peer review. This may vary depending on the complexity of the fishery under review. At least 10 fishery assessments are expected to be peer reviewed during the 12 month trial period.

Further information can be found at our Program Improvements site (click to view):
