20/03/2015: Indonesia dominates shrimp market share in US

Indonesia dominated the shrimp market share in the United States with a value of US$93.5 million in January, which was 22.7 percent of the total market share, with frozen peeled shrimp warm water products, Nasdaq reports.

"This comes as good news in the midst of the government's efforts to boost exports by up to 300 percent by 2019," Commercial Attache of the Indonesian Embassy in Washington DC, Ni Made Ayu Marhini, said in a press release on Tuesday.

Data obtained from the official US trading in March revealed that Indonesia led shrimp exports to the country with a value of US$93.5 million.

India follows in the second position with US$91.4 million, or 22.19 percent of the market share; Ecuador comes in third with US$51.1 million, or 12.41 percent of the market share.

In the ASEAN region, Vietnam gained some US$44.3 million with a market share of 10.7 percent; Thailand earned US$34.2 million with a market share of 8.3 percent; and Malaysia gained US$14.3 million with a market share of 3.49 percent.

According to Marhini, Indonesia should be able to maintain this good export momentum to keep increasing exports all year long.

"Shrimp is the top seafood product of the US market. So it is a promising business," Marhini noted.

Furthermore, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration pointed out that more than 90 percent of the fish market and fishery products in the country were imported with an increasing consumption trend.
