02/10/2014: Jefo Nutrition launches Aquaculture Nutrition Scholarships for students in three Chinese universities

Today’s students are tomorrow’s teachers, researchers, leaders, politicians and key decision makers.

Having an appropriate mind-set to accept change and clearer understandings of the upcoming challenges would help to find better and sustainable solutions for future generations.

Understanding these challenges and to better prepare the future leaders to face them, Jefo Nutrition Inc, the Canadian company devoted to develop, promote and distribute species-specific specialty feed additives for more than 30 years, has recently launched a graduate scholarship program in five Chinese universities.

The main objective of the program is to encourage outstanding students to develop critical thinking skills needed to find solutions to feed the growing world population.

Ten students were selected for the “First Jefo Nutrition Graduate Scholarship” where six are pursuing advanced degree in aquaculture nutrition. These six students are: Likun Wei and Xiaofang Wang of Shanghai Ocean University, Tao Wu and Kequan Chen of Suchow University and Jiahui Li and Feng Li of Guangdong Ocean University.

Allocating a majority of the scholarships highlights the importance of Chinese aquaculture industry to meet the global demand.  With the growing consumer preference for healthy food and lack of quality protein sources, Jefo predicts a high demand of its feed additives especially of the industry leading heat-stable protease in the Chinese aquaculture feed market.

The scholarship was awarded during the week of September 15, 2014. After the award ceremony, Dr Kabir Chowdhury, the Global Product Manager – Aquaculture gave a seminar on “Challenges Facing Global Aqua Feed Industry – An Overview”.

In his talk, he identified three major upcoming challenges, these are: (a) the raw material crisis; (b) the knowledge gaps in nutritional requirement, nutritional physiology, gut microbes and their roles, and gene-diet interactions; and (c) industry and academia - can we work more closely?
