1/11/13: EWOS sale, major Chinese RAS farm, aquaculture behind bars

EWOS has been sold to venture capitalists Bain Capital and Altor Equity Partners for NOK 6.5 billion. The move, which will make the Norwegian fish nutrition company independent from its parent group Cermaq, was heralded by its new owners as a new beginning.  Citing its strong knowledge base and market position, CEO Einar Wathne called the company ‘uniquely poised’ to lead the industry into a more sophisticated and resource-efficient future.

Hainan, China is set to become the location of the world’s first land-based, full production cycle aquaculture facility for salmon and cod. Norwegian fish farm experts Futurama and AquaOptima are partnering with China’s Lim Shrimp to build the temperature-controlled RAS farm to supply Atlantic cod and salmon to China’s insatiable fish market.

Aquaculture is being brought behind bars in a new initiative in Coimbatore Central Prison in India. The Times of India reports how prisoners with previous experience of fish farming will both maintain the facility and provide training to others, selling the fish to the outside world. The authorities’ ambitions don’t stop there however: a poultry farm is projected to be built over the top of the fish farm, to supply the prison canteen.
