Event: Algae World Australia

Australia has been increasingly dependent on overseas fuel supply. It is believed that 85 per cent of Australia's transport fuel now comes from overseas. All that might change! According to researchers, within 20 years the country could produce commercial oil from algae and could potentially match the output of the Middle East.

Experts from University of Queensland (UQ) have discovered that with the particular species of algae found in Australia it is possible to produce algae biodiesel at a lower cost, which would not only compete with fossil fuels but would do so by emitting less greenhouse gas.

According to Prof Dr Ben Hankamer, Director, Solar Biofuels Consortium, Queensland Prof at Institute for Molecular Bioscience, the University of Queensland:

"The development of sustainable fuel systems is one of the most urgent challenges facing our society, due to the need to reduce CO2 emissions, increase fuel security and develop a sustainable basis for economic development into the future"

Join Prof Dr. Ben Hankamer at the 3rd Algae World Australia, on 26-28 August, in Adelaide, as he speaks on 'Towards high efficiency photo bioreactor systems' and discusses issues such as 'determining effective algae strains and bioreactor designs'. He'll also give you an outline of the developments at University of Queensland and discuss the process of producing algae with highly effective PBR systems.
